The race between Dawn Approach and Toronado

When The Flying Dutchman met Voltigeur in a match race at York in 1851 at least 100,000 spectators were reported to have turned up to see it. When Seabiscuit took on War Admiral, the previous year's Triple Crown winner, at Pimlico in 1938, the 40,000 crowd at the track was a tiny fraction of the 40m who tuned in to the radio commentary.

Match races are no longer a feature of racing on either side of the Atlantic, having fallen out of favour in the US since the brilliant filly Ruffian suffered a fatal injury in the early stages of a match at Belmont in 1975. Yet the simple, all-or-nothing appeal of an evenly balanced head-to-head can still have the power to fascinate and to sell tickets, too.

There will be more than two runners in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday afternoon but the course is still eager to promote it as the "Duel on the Downs".

Some head-to-heads, like Seabiscuit versus War Admiral, are a long-delayed meeting between champions from different countries or generations. The race between Dawn Approach and Toronado at Goodwood is the other kind of head-to-head, the one with a score that needs to be settled.

Like Voltigeur and The Flying Dutchman, who had been first and second in the Doncaster Cup prior to their famous match the following year, the two market leaders in Wednesday's race have met before.

The first occasion was the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in April, when Dawn Approach was an impressive winner and Toronado flopped in fourth. Then, in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, Toronado was within a short-head of revenge after taking a bump in the home straight.

Richard Hughes, Toronado's jockey, is looking forward to the next meeting between the two colts more than anyone. "I've been thinking about it from the time I heard the result being called at [Royal] Ascot," Hughes said.

"I feel there is a bit [of a score to settle], I feel I was very unlucky at Ascot. I think an awful lot of the horse and I'd love him to show his true best. He weighs 530 kilos and he was driven sideways at the most crucial point of the race last time, shoes manufacturer so I think there's a good argument that I only have to find a little bit."

Dawn Approach – said by Jim Bolger, his trainer, on Saturday to be in "better than good form, mighty awesome form" – has lost only once in nine career starts, when he was last after starting favourite for the Derby in early June.

The Irish-trained runner is narrowly preferred in the ante-post market at a top price of 5-4, while Toronado is 13-8. Between them the pair take out nearly 85% of the market with Declaration Of War, the Queen Anne Stakes winner, their only serious rival at 5-1.

"I presume both of us [Hughes and Kevin Manning, Dawn Approach's jockey] would like a nice strong-run race so his horse and mine can settle," Hughes said. "I can't see there being more than five runners, so as long as it's a nice clean race I'll be happy and, if I get beaten, it will be fair and square.

"I enjoy Goodwood and I ride with confidence around there, I feel like I know how to do the right thing around there but that doesn't always mean you're getting all the luck. You need that on your side there now and again."

For Dawn Approach, victory would push his claim to be Europe's best three-year-old miler beyond the point of reasonable doubt. It would guarantee star status when he retires to join Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud breeding business, and revive the spirits of the Godolphin racing operation as it attempts to emerge from the shadow of a doping scandal. Yet in the space of two minutes Toronado could seize the kudos and establish his own claim to be the best around, because this meeting between the pair is the one that most racing fans are going to remember.

"It's very good for racing," Hughes says. "When they both loomed up in the Guineas at Newmarket, you could hear the roar go up from the stands, and that day I knew after going a furlong that I wouldn't win the Guineas. Hearing that roar is why we ride all the other horses, so that we can get on the good ones."

Shoe auction aims to give YWCA a leg up

Piercing zebra print stiletto platforms, strappy red pumps, baby blue go-go boots and a pair of low cheetah print boots.

These are just some of the treasures tucked away in the basement of the YWCA office building in downtown Bremerton awaiting a public debut.

The shoes will be the centerpiece of the nonprofit organization's upcoming "Take a Walk in Her Shoes" auction fundraiser, which aims to raise awareness and funding for its domestic violence programs.

"We're a giving community but our challenge is how do you build more support?" YWCA executive director Linda Joyce said. "You do that by doing something new."

In the past year, the agency has focused on raising more awareness about its services. The nonprofit has been in the community since 1948, but it was time to remind the community about everything the YWCA does, Joyce said.

That included creating new ways to raise awareness that will translate to more financial donations. That's how the agency came up with the shoe auction.

"What woman doesn't like shoes?" Joyce said.

The event, planned for Saturday, Sept. 8, starts with a walk from the Amy Burnett Gallery at 408 Pacific Ave. to the Admiral Theatre at the corner of Fifth Street.

But the walk isn't just any walk. Participants are encouraged to have fun, create teams to raise money and go all out with costumes and a focus on the shoes that will adorn their feet. It's hoped that includes men in high heels or other creative footwear.

"We hope it's an evening just of fun," Tracy McConaughy of the YWCA said.

The fundraiser is a first for the YWCA and the hope is it will raise awareness about what survivors of domestic violence endure.

"We want to reach the folks that don't know so much about it," Joyce said. "The awareness piece is the really important piece."

Joyce hopes people will be able to empathize with domestic violence survivors and learn about the many programs the YWCA offers to help women and children escape abusive situations and become self-sufficient.

Event organizers also hope the walk and following auction will bring in more donations to the nonprofit that has seen its funding cut by roughly 20 percent in recent years. The decline is largely attributed to cuts in federal and state funding and a decrease in public donations as people tighten their budgets because of the poor economy.

The YWCA is accepting shoe donations that will be auctioned to raise money. Roughly 100 shoes have been donated already, but event organizers are hoping to have closer to 250. Any and all donations of new or barely worn shoes will be accepted through Sept. 4 at the YWCA office at 905 Pacific Ave. in Bremerton.

Some of the shoes ready for auction include labels like Dolce & Gabbana, Dana Buchman, Anne Klein, Bellini, Guess, Steve Madden, Sam Edelman, Carlos Santana, Liz Claiborne and Puma. A Seattle department store also has promised a donation of shoe samples for the auction, but asked its name not be mentioned before the auction to limit request from other nonprofits, McConaughy said.

"We need people to come out," Joyce said. "We've tried to make it an event that's affordable and festive and fun."

Katy Perry's style shown in Barbie doll

Katy Perry's special-edition Barbie doll "sums up" her unique "personal style".

The American songstress has had an impressive one-of-a-kind toy made by Mattel.

The doll sports a replica of the stunning cupcake-covered dress from Katy's hugely successful California Dreams world tour wardrobe. The candy-coloured dress is teamed with pink and purple heeled sandals with Swarovski crystal-encrusted fishnet tights.

The doll is completed with an electric blue wig - identical to the one Katy wore with her famous dress during the series of shows.

The intricately designed doll is testament to Katy's unique style.

"We hand-painted all the details and applied the crystals here in our design studio," Peter Helenek, VP of design for Barbie at Mattel Inc., told WWD. "They create a look that sums up Katy and her personal style."

Nicki Minaj also has a new Barbie. The rapper's replica doll features a long baby pink wig, complete with an impressively large rosy tulle dress and matching pink ankle boots.

Nicki's doll comes completed with diamante cuffs and a Barbie necklace. Helenek says the attention to detail was paramount when creating the one-off collector's items.

"There are fans out there who look specifically [at the] shoes when buying [Barbies]," he revealed.

The dolls are on sale at Charitybuzz.com today. All proceeds will benefit Project Angel Food, which is a Los Angeles-based charity that delivers free meals to those with life-threatening illnesses.
